Tunisia rescues 50 undocumented immigrants adrift off its southeastern coast

Tunisia's maritime guards rescued 50 undocumented immigrants from sinking boats as they thwarted three attempts at illegal immigration off the southeastern coast, the Tunisian National Guard.

According to a Facebook statement, the individuals from sub-Saharan Africa were saved near Sfax province.

Additionally, 28 suspects were arrested and several steel boats confiscated during the operations.

The total number attempting the perilous Mediterranean crossing to Italy's Lampedusa, a common entry point for migrants from sub-Saharan Africa, was not disclosed.

Tunisia is a key departure point for those aiming for irregular entry into Europe via the central Mediterranean route.
