Tunisian activist wins "Green Nobel" for exposing waste scandal

Tunisian environmentalist Semia Labidi Gharbi has won the Goldman Environmental Prize for exposing a 2020 scandal involving 280 containers of Italian waste falsely labeled as recyclable. The shipment contained hazardous household waste, banned in Tunisia. Gharbi’s campaign pressured Italy to repatriate 6,000 tonnes of waste by 2022. The scandal led to the firing of Tunisia’s environment minister and 26 prosecutions. "We are not a dumping ground," Gharbi told AFP. The Goldman committee praised her grassroots efforts in halting illegal waste trafficking.
