The US in conjunction with the UNHCR has offered $5 million in aid to provide protection, shelter, and essential services to vulnerable populations in and outside the Mbera camp, which hosts more than 100,000 refugees from Mali, as well as returned Mauritanians. The assistance also includes support for local communities generously hosting Malian refugees and welcoming returnees.
The press release goes on to say “we anticipate large numbers of new arrivals from Mali by the end of the first quarter of 2024, we acknowledge the tremendous efforts that the Mauritanian Government has provided in hosting the growing population of refugees while seeking sustainable solutions to work with the donor community.”
