UN Rights Office Alarmed by Egypt’s New Criminal Procedure Draft Law

The U.N. human rights office (OHCHR) on Monday raised concerns over Egypt’s draft Code of Criminal Procedure, warning it may breach international law. Approved by parliament, the bill grants prosecutors broad powers over detentions, surveillance, and travel bans, which OHCHR said could weaken legal rights and accountability. Last-minute undisclosed amendments fueled transparency fears. OHCHR urged President Sisi to review the law before signing. Rights groups, including Amnesty and HRW, previously opposed the bill, fearing expanded abuse of power.
