UN Security Council adopts resolution calling for a ceasefire in Sudan ahead of Ramadan

The UN Security Council adopted on Friday a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Sudan to coincide with the beginning of Ramadan.

The resolution calls on all sides to adopt an immediate "cessation of hostilities" ahead of Ramadan and for warring parties to allow "unhindered" humanitarian access across borders.

Fighting between the Sudanese Army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces began in April 2023. A central cause of tension was the integration of the RSF into the armed forces.

The head of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, urged parties to “shoulder their responsibilities to prevent the serious risk of famine and other humanitarian catastrophes to befall the Sudanese people and the neighbouring states.”

UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, also called for a truce in the North African country during Ramadan, warning of a humanitarian crisis of "colossal proportions" with a growing threat of famine.
