Why the UN still matters across the Maghreb
In our increasingly un-reported World, well, that part of the media circus that doesn’t involve celebrity and assorted trivia,
Morocco saw a 7.8 percent increase in its female prison population between 2022 and 2023, a rate that exceeds the 5.55 percent rise in male prisoners, according to Morocco World News, citing data from the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Rehabilitation.
This marks the largest annual surge in female inmates over the past decade in the kingdom. By the end of last year, the total number of prisoners stood at 102,653, with women making up 2.47 percent of that figure. The demographic breakdown further reveals that 2.19 percent of prisoners are elderly and 1.22 percent are juveniles.
